Telephony 101: IP Telephony differs from Voice over IP (VoIP). Voice over IP (VoIP)
defines a way to carry voice calls over an IP Network including the digitization
and packetization of the voice streams. IP Telephony utilizes the VoIP standards
to create a Telephony system where higher level features such as advanced call routing,
voicemail, contact centers, etc., can be utilized. IP Telephony has been around
for several years now. It is a proven technology that, when implemented correctly,
improves communications between administration, staff, students and community. IP
Telephony can also integrate your surveillance, access control, bell, paging, wireless
and internal/external IP communications.
Example: City School District
Overall, DataServ installed 1,200+ Voice Over IP phones in 24 locations, two call
managers in separate locations, as well as a full Network upgrade for a district
with 19 school buildings that spans 20 square miles. This included a layer three
switch upgrade that connected 24 facilities via fiber. In addition, DataServ created
IP Telephony eLearning tutorials to offer online as supplementary training after
the in-person training was complete, given that this project provided a phone to
every teacher. Benefits of this project include enhanced security, communications
and ultimately cost savings for the district.
